Investigation into High-Dose HRT Prescriptions at Dr. Louise Newson’s Clinics

England’s health regulator, the Care Quality Commission (CQC), is investigating “information of concern” regarding clinics operated by one of TV’s most prominent menopause doctors, Dr. Louise Newson.

According to BBC Panorama, Dr. Newson has lost her accreditation from the British Menopause Society (BMS) due to the prescription of high doses of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Over a dozen patients from her private clinics, Newson Health, reported complications, including thickened womb linings, which can increase the risk of cancer.

Newson Health defended its methods, stating that its treatments are based on extensive clinical experience and data, tailored to individual needs to provide the best possible menopause care. The clinic also emphasized that its practices align with national guidelines and noted that the BMS is a charity, not a regulatory authority.

The CQC confirmed it is examining the information it received to assess potential risks to patients and determine if further action is necessary. Newson Health stated it has addressed all concerns raised by the CQC and has not been informed of any ongoing issues. The clinic also expressed confidence in the quality of its care, highlighting its “Good” rating from the CQC.

One patient shared her experience, revealing that her HRT dose—three times the recommended maximum—did not alleviate her symptoms. Instead, she continued to suffer from severe hot flushes, anxiety, and insomnia.

Four former doctors from Newson Health also expressed concerns to Panorama, with one warning that the clinic’s practices could harm patients.

The BMS explained its decision to remove Dr. Newson from its specialist register last year, citing concerns that certain aspects of her practice deviated from established guidelines. This prompted the BMS and five other organizations, including the Royal College of GPs, to issue a joint safety alert about the risks of high-dose HRT.

Professor Janice Rymer, chair of the BMS and a consultant gynecologist, warned that excessive estrogen doses could lead to unnecessary medical interventions.
