Recent Research

A study published in the journal PLoS One highlighted agency’s role in coping with today’s uncertainties. Mindfulness-Based Boxing Therapy (MBBT) is an innovative exercise program designed to help individuals with mental health issues, especially those dealing with depression and anxiety. This non-contact boxing therapy blends mindfulness, meditation, and group therapy to empower participants and promote self-agency while making exercise more accessible.

In a recent study involving nine adults with major depressive disorder or generalized anxiety disorder, participants attended 90-minute sessions twice a week for 10 weeks at a psychiatric clinic in Toronto. The goal was to assess the acceptability and feasibility of this program for individuals facing these mental health challenges.

Results demonstrated promising outcomes, with high retention (89%) and attendance (84%) rates. Participants reported a significant decline in depression (54%) and anxiety (51%), along with an increase in mindfulness (79%). Feedback from participants emphasized feelings of inclusivity, emotional control, improved self-esteem, and a sense of community. While the findings are promising, additional comprehensive studies are necessary to verify the benefits of MBBT. Overall, this intervention demonstrates potential as a supportive tool for enhancing mental health through engaging physical activity.

Conclusions

This new group exercise program combines mindful practice with non-contact boxing, known as MBBT, to help adults manage anxiety and depression. The program yielded promising results. Feedback from participants indicated that they found the program enjoyable and beneficial, highlighting its unique approach compared to traditional exercise. The results demonstrated significant improvements in participants’ mood and mindfulness, suggesting that incorporating mindfulness into exercise could be advantageous for mental health.

However, the study has notable limitations. The program’s developer led the effort, which raises questions about whether other instructors could achieve similar results. The absence of a control group makes it difficult to determine if the improvements were specifically due to MBBT or other factors. The small sample size also restricts how broadly clinicians can apply these findings. 

Overall, the study suggests that MBBT could be a beneficial option for enhancing mental health. However, further research with a larger sample and a control comparison is necessary to confirm its effectiveness and to understand how to implement it more broadly.
